This was my best posting :
“My first class in an aboriginal community in northern BC was very memorable as it required me to employ extensive use of flipcharts and the whiteboard. This was not soo much due to the lack of technology, but because of the distraction encountered when students were allowed unmonitored use of the computers (facebook, etc).
With the whiteboard, my lectures focused mostly on working examples of accounting procedures and problems. This was very effective as it provided the students with a step by step flow and more importantly, allowed them to participate in the learning process by offering solutions.
The Flipcharts were especially useful for the student presentations and group projects, as many students were introduced to the concept of the 'Parking Lot'. At first, they was hesitation to powerpoint presentations and public speaking, but they soon gave way to eagerness for further use. “
Many of my students now work for First Nations of Community based organizations, employing these same principles learned in the classroom.
It brought back some fond memories of my students and in it I showed how an instructor can utilize the tools available to effectively engage their students.
I hope this can inspire other instructors.
